We are going to meet Russell Shaw this season, and the casting couldn’t be better.
Jensen Ackles has been cast as the estranged brother of Justin Hartley‘s Colter Shaw on Tracker. (Fun fact: Both starred on Smallville, but at different times.) Hartley shared the news himself with a fun video on Instagram featuring Ackles, and TV Insider has learned he will appear in the May 12 episode.
In “Off the Books,” Colter is forced to team up with his estranged brother, Russell, who enlists his help to track down a former army buddy who’s gone missing after several weeks of paranoid behavior. The investigation takes the brothers into the world of Special Forces missions, shady off-the-books programs and conspiracy theories, all while they contend with their family’s past. Check out a photo from the episode above.
Hartley starts the video by thanking everyone for watching and the response to the show. “We’ve been talking about Russell Shaw, my brother, all season this family drama that’s been going on between Colter and Russell, and we finally came up with what I think is the perfect casting choice,” he says. “This person knocks it out of the park every time.” You can then hear someone in the background playing a video game, and that person is Ackles.
The series premiere of Tracker introduced the mystery of what happened to Colter’s father (Lee Tergesen) when he was younger; flashbacks made it look like Russell (18 at the time), after following him out of their cabin in the woods, may have pushed him to his death. (His father, Colter shared in the premiere, “taught us how to track, how to hunt. Taught us to free-climb at this place he called Devil’s Notch.”)
In the present day of the premiere, Colter received a series of text messages he ignored: “Come on, Colter. Call me back. We gotta talk.” “Don’t ignore me, Colter. There is something you need to know…” “I’m not going away. You need to hear what I have to say.” The episode ended with Colter returning to that cabin, where his mother joined him at the grave marker for his father. He told her about Russell’s calls and asked if there was something she knew about his brother or father that he should know. She told him to block the number and ignore him. She’d asked very little of him over the years, but what she wanted was for him to leave it be, for everyone’s sake.
News of Ackles’ casting as Colter’s brother comes soon after Hartley revealed that Melissa Roxburgh will be playing his sister, Dory, as an adult. She’ll appear in the May 5 episode, “Beyond the Campus Walls.” In that episode, when a grad student goes missing after a house party, his friends and family believe he buckled under the pressure of his research grant. But, after consulting with his sister Dr. Dory Shaw, a professor at the school, Colter uncovers a trail of explicit photos and messages that lead him to uncover a dangerous – and deadly – conspiracy on campus.

Jensen Ackles Joins Justin Hartley in ‘Tracker’ at CBS
UPDATED: Jensen Ackles is set to guest star in the CBS drama series “Tracker.”
Series lead Justin Hartley revealed the news in a video posted to his official Instagram. In the video, Hartley teases that they have found the “perfect casting choice” to play Russell Shaw, the estranged brother of Hartley’s character, Colter Shaw. As the video ends, Hartley turns the camera to reveal Ackles on the show’s set.
Ackles will appear in the episode airing on May 12. In the episode, Russell enlists Colter’s help to track down an old Army buddy. “Tracker” has four episodes left to go for its first season and has already been renewed for a second.
Ackles is of course best known for his starring role in the long-running series “Supernatural” opposite Jared Padalecki. The show ran for 15 seasons, first on The WB and after when it became The CW. Ackles then executive produced and narrated the prequel series “The Winchesters,” which aired for one season. Ackles recently appeared in Season 3 of the hit Amazon series “The Boys” as Soldier Boy, a role he reprised in the spinoff “Gen V.” He also recently appeared in the ABC series “Big Sky” and made a cameo on The CW series “Walker,” which stars Padalecki.
Ackles is repped by Gersh and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.

‘Tracker’ Casts Jensen Ackles In Justin Hartley Series – Airdate & Storyline Revealed With First-Look Photo – Update
UPDATED with airdate and episode synopsis: Justin Hartley‘s Colter Shaw has found his brother. Hartley announced Thursday in a video on Instagram (see below) that Jensen Ackles has been cast as Colter’s estranged brother Russell on CBS’ drama series Tracker.
The network revealed Friday that Ackles’ character will be introduced in the season’s penultimate episode “Off The Books” on Sunday, May 12. CBS also released a first-look photo of the two brothers above.
Per CBS’ synopsis: “Colter is forced to team up with his estranged brother, Russell, who enlists his help to track down a former army buddy who’s gone missing after several weeks of paranoid behavior. The investigation takes the brothers into the world of Special Forces missions, shady off-the-books programs and conspiracy theories, all while they contend with their family’s past.”
The series, a strong ratings performer, received an early Season 2 renewal just weeks following its Season 1 premiere.
Tracker, based on the bestselling novel The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver, stars Hartley as Colter Shaw, a lone-wolf survivalist who roams the country as a reward seeker, using his expert tracking skills to help private citizens and law enforcement solve all manner of mysteries while contending with his own fractured family.
The series also stars Fiona Rene, Robin Weigert, Abby McEnany and Eric Graise also star.
Tracker is produced by 20th Television. Hartley, Ken Olin, Elwood Reid and Ben Winters serve as executive producers.
Ackles is best known for his long run as Dean Winchester in The CW’s Supernatural, a role he reprised in Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters. His other recent credits include the role of Sheriff Beau Arlen in Big Sky, Soldier Boy in The Boys and a guest role on Gen V.
