Bubble Shows ‘The Conners,’ ‘Walker,’ ‘Lopez vs. Lopez’ and Other Series Await Their Fate as Upfronts Approach

    By Joe Otterson

Some of this TV season’s blood has already been spilled — looking at you, “NCIS: Hawai’i” — but as we head toward upfronts week, there are still a number of broadcast shows “on the bubble.”

But as the networks settle in on a diet of mostly stable franchises and fewer series pilots, there’s also less primetime schedule frenzy this year. The days before upfronts week which would normally mean a rapid fire few days of broadcast series renewals and cancellations announcements. But normal left the building a long time ago.

The broadcast network portion of upfronts has been so significantly pared down from years past that it hardly resembles what it used to be. These days, most of the broadcast networks announce renewals and cancellations well ahead of their actual presentations.

Take CBS, which has already announced its new fall and spring schedules as well as all of its renewals and cancellations. And NBC just announced another early renewal, this time for the multi-cam comedy “Night Court.”

For the series still awaiting their fate, here’s a look at what has the best chance of coming back — and what is likely done after this season.

    ABC

ABC has renewed most of its scripted shows for next season already, while the show “High Potential” starring Kaitlin Olson will debut during the 2024-2025 season after it was originally ordered to series last year but held due to the strikes. ABC has also given a straight-to-series order to a new medical drama from Ryan Murphy called “Dr. Odyssey” starring Joshua Jackson.

The only two shows still awaiting word at ABC are the single-cam comedy “Not Dead Yet,” starring Gina Rodriguez, and the multi-cam “The Conners.” According to sources, “Not Dead Yet” will likely be done after its sophomore season, with the show failing to break out in the ratings. (Should “Not Dead Yet” become just “Dead,” then ABC will at least still be in business with Rodriguez via the new gamer “Lucky 13,” which she hosts.)

“The Conners,” ABC’s long-running “Roseanne” spinoff, has faired better in the ratings. Still, reports have already emerged that the show is going to wrap up with an abbreviated seventh season — a possibility that sources have also confirmed to Variety. ABC declined comment.

ABC has just two pilots in the wings this year — the multi-cam comedies “Shifting Gears” starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings and “Forgive & Forget” starring Ty Burrell. Neither will shoot until after upfronts, however.

    The CW

The CW has pretty much abandoned completely original scripted programming, opting instead to shift its focus to sports, unscripted shows and international co-productions/foreign imports. The network also has WWE’s NXT weekly show joining its primetime lineup in the fall.

The three remaining shows from the previous CW regime are “All American,” “All American: Homecoming,” and “Walker.” Of the three, sources say “All American” has the best chance of coming back for another season, given its continued popularity. But even that is by no means a guarantee.

“Walker” and “Homecoming” are likely to be done after their current seasons, according to sources, though neither will be airing their season finales until after upfronts. That fact may work against “Homecoming,” though, as The CW just announced that the show’s third season will debut on July 8, and airing a scripted series over the summer is never a good sign for renewal chances.

    Fox

Fox technically has five shows awaiting word on new seasons, but at least for the time being, it’s really just three. Dramas “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” and “The Cleaning Lady” and animated comedy “The Great North” have been airing new seasons this spring, while “9-1-1: Lone Star” and “Accused” are being held for now as their latest seasons were delayed by the strikes. Neither of the latter two shows have set a premiere date yet so don’t expect any major decisions on their fates any time soon.

Sources say that “Great North,” “Alert” and “The Cleaning Lady” are all looking good to come back. They are aided by the fact that Fox’s live-action scripted offerings are slim at the moment, though the network does have the new shows “Doc” and “Rescue: Hi-Surf” debuting next season, as well as the animated comedy “Universal Basic Guys/The Hoagie Bros.” It is also important to note that Fox will be getting two hours of primetime back in October when WWE’s “SmackDown” leaves the broadcast network for its new home at USA Network.

    NBC

NBC also has just two shows on the bubble at present — the multi-cams “Extended Family” and “Lopez vs. Lopez.” Both shows could go either way, but sources say that “Extended Family” is the more likely of the two to get a renewal at this point.

The network still has the dramas “Brilliant Minds” (fka “Dr. Wolf”) starring Zachary Quinto and “The Hunting Party,” as well as the comedy “St. Denis Medical” waiting in the wings from last year. They also have three pilots in contention — “Suits: LA,” meant to capitalize on the renewed interest in the USA Network show “Suits,” as well as “Happy Places” (starring Reba McEntire) and the drama “Grosse Pointe Garden Society.” Of those, only “Happy Places” is expected to be ready for a possible upfront week pickup.

Tracker’s Melissa Roxburgh Weighs In on Colter and Dory’s Reunion, Shares Hope for Scenes With Jensen Ackles

    BY RYAN SCHWARTZ - MAY 5, 2024 6:59 PM

Season 1, Episode 11 of hit CBS drama introduced Manifest‘s Melissa Roxburgh as Colter’s younger sister, Dr. Dory Shaw, who has followed in their parents’ footsteps and become a college professor. But unlike Colter, who is determined to get to the bottom of what really went down with their father more than 20 years ago — what’s this about Ashton having been a government contractor? — Dory is determined to leave the past behind her and get on with her life. It’s what she’s been trying to do ever since Dad died and she went to live with her Uncle Dave and Aunt Melissa, while Colter stayed back to take care of their mother, Mary.

During the hour, we discovered that Dory is still in touch with her other brother, Russell — who, as we know, Colter believes murdered their father in 2003. We also learned that Dory doesn’t trust Mary’s version of the truth.

Colter’s reunion with Dory will be followed by an even more tense reunion with Russell, who will be played by Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles and first seen in Episode 12 (airing Sunday, May 12). Below, Roxburgh weighs in on Dory’s debut, her respective relationships with Colter, Russell and Mary, and her hopes for appearing alongside both Justin Hartley and Jensen Ackles in Season 2.

    tracker-melissa-roxburgh-cast-colter-shaw-sister-teaser

TVLINE | The audience at this point knows quite a bit about the Shaw family and what happened with Dad. How much did Melissa know about all this family drama?
I’d seen part of the show already, so I knew that it was a complicated family dynamic, but I got a little bit more context in where things were at coming onto the show — not only where Dory was at, but where Colter and Russell and Mom were at, and where things kind of stood. I definitely came into a very complicated dynamic and I’m excited to see how it all unravels.

TVLINE | Throughout this episode, Dory is pleading with Colter to move on and forget about the past. She insists that she has let go of all this family baggage. But do you really think that Dory has moved on? Or has she just done a better job of not letting it consume her the way that it consumes Colter?
I think she has definitely done a better job. Despite how she talks in the episode, there’s definitely a part of her that needs to know the truth [about Mom and Dad] just as much, but she knows that if she pulls the thread that it will all unravel, and she doesn’t know what is going to be behind the curtain. I think her hope is to have everyone move on. She seems to be a very logical person, especially with her career and whatnot, but deep down she knows that it’s more complicated than that.

    tracker-justin-hartley-season-1-episode-1-cbs

TVLINE | Dory says that she is nothing like her parents. But as Colter points out, Dory is a professor, just like Ashton and Mary. Do you get the sense that, even though Dory was pretty young when everything went to hell, that she looked up to Mom and Dad at a certain point in her life?
What she’s doing with her life now is maybe what she had hoped her parents had done. Because I think that there is a respect for the academia aspect of her family, and she is just trying to do right in her own life. She admires a lot of what she was taught growing up, but.…

TVLINE | But Dory has found a more practical way to apply some of the stuff that Dad taught them?
    Yeah.

TVLINE | When Colter and Dory are first reunited, Dory seems really excited to see her big brother despite the fact that he’s ghosted her for the past year. Why do you think she’s able to let go of that anger so quickly and embrace her brother being back in her life?
She knows that he has always been like this. Their family is not normal, especially how they were raised. There’s an understanding about the trauma that he’s been through as well. I don’t think Dory is a judgmental person at all; she really just wants what is best for her two brothers. When Colter does show up, it’s like the prodigal son kind of thing. She’s just happy that he’s back, but then she realizes [later in the episode] that he’s not really back. That’s almost what upsets her more: that he isn’t even showing up with the right intentions. That’s what hurts her the most.

TVLINE | Dory confronts Colter at dinner about accepting Mary’s version of the truth at face value. It’s pretty evident at this point that Dory does not trust Mom. Do you have a sense of whether Dory and Mary are on speaking terms?
I would guess not. Dory is pretty smart, and I think that she clocks a lot of what her mother is doing. She knows that there is way more to the story [about Dad] than Mom has let on, for whatever reason. For Dory, trying to have a healthy life at this point means maybe not being close to Mom.

    justin-hartley-jensen-ackles-tracker

TVLINE | We learn that Dory is still in touch with Russell. Do you know anything more about that relationship? Perhaps Justin or one of the other producers looped you in?
I gathered that Dory and Russell are definitely closer than Dory and Colter, but we’ll see how that changes as Dory is more involved in the show, especially with Russell coming back as well. I’m curious to see what happens there. I’m excited to see how the dynamics shift.

TVLINE | It was announced a little less than two weeks after your casting was confirmed that Jensen Ackles had been tapped to play Russell. Were you aware when you were filming your episode that Jensen was attached?
Yeah, Justin told me. I’m so excited because one of my first jobs was with Jensen [on Supernatural]. I think it was my second job ever, actually. I was so green and so new, and it would be nice to play with him again.

    melissa-roxburgh-supernatural

TVLINE | I feel like the audience is owed a scene, or perhaps an entire episode, where we get Colter, Russell, Dory and Mary in one room….
I want that! I want to know what happens!

TVLINE | I’m just saying, that would make for a pretty epic Thanksgiving episode in Season 2.
It would definitely be a dramatic one.

TVLINE | Now, fair warning: I’ve saved perhaps the dumbest question for last.
    There are no dumb questions.

TVLINE | You haven’t heard it yet!
    [Laughs]

TVLINE | On Tracker, Colter has mastered the art of tracking someone down — typically within a few days, sometimes within a matter of hours. Now, you were on a show, Manifest, where a plane full of passengers disappeared for five years…
    Correct…

TVLINE | Now, let’s imagine that Colter Shaw existed in the Manifest universe. Do you think he would have stood a chance at finding that plane sooner?
Oh, my word! [Laughs] Ben and Michaela would have totally elicited his help and got him on board to help us figure out what was going on. We were dealing with the trauma of disappearing for five years. We needed someone who was a little bit more logical and still wanted to solve the problem. We did have outside help, but I think with Colter, we might not have lasted four seasons. We would have been done in two seasons.

How ‘Tracker’ — and Melissa Roxburgh’s Dory — Just Set Up Jensen Ackles’ Introduction as Russell

    Meredith Jacobs - MAY 5, 2024, 10:00 PM

    tracker-111-dory-colter-1014x570

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Tracker Season 1 Episode 11 “Beyond the Campus Walls.”]

It only takes until the end of the latest Tracker episode, but Colter (Justin Hartley) does sit down for dinner with his sister, Dory (Melissa Roxburgh).

It had been a year without a phone call when the two reunited (he doesn’t call her back), and he showed her the file he got about their father—which includes something they hadn’t known: Their father was employed by the government for years. As Dory sees it, their mother was just as crazy as their late father, and she’s more than happy to leave that all in the past. She remarks that their brother Russell (Jensen Ackles, guest starring in the May 12 episode) says Colter’s ducking his calls (yes, they keep in touch) and tries to encourage him to talk to him. Though he doesn’t commit to dinner at the time, he does sit down for a meal with her at the end of the episode.

Dory suggests that Colter doesn’t stop by more because part of him resents her for leaving to live with their aunt and uncle while he stayed. Their mother needed him, he insists. Their father had died, Russell was gone, and she didn’t have anyone. While Dory argues that their mother wasn’t a fragile woman who got dragged along against her will and rather went along with every wild idea of their father’s, like living off the grid, Colter doesn’t see it that way. She’s moved on, and she was hoping that by talking, he could, too.

She wants her brothers back, she explains, and as she sees it, whatever their mother told him is either a complete lie or a BS story to keep him around. “What happened happened, but I’m not going to let it have power over me. And mom, that’s all she has, is the past and that’s why she holds it over us because she can’t let it go. She has this image of who dad was, and sure, that’s a version of the events, but that is not what happened,” says Dory.

“I want to know what everyone else wants to know. I want to know what happened,” Roxburgh tells TV Insider.

That dinner scene was the first one she filmed. “It was kind of nice to have that be the first scene. It was a lot of proper conversation,” she recalls. “I think she has a lot of question marks herself around what happened, but I think that she knows that if they keep going down that path as a family, then it’ll just move them further and further apart.”

Furthermore, she continues, “I think there’s a part of her that doesn’t want to know the truth. She just wants everyone back together and she wants a family. But knowing that Colter doesn’t share that or isn’t ready to talk about it with her in the way that she wants, it’s hard. I think you just see two siblings who have gone through so much together and been raised a certain way, figuring out how to bring that into adult life.”

Dory also encourages Colter to call Russell, and he does seem to be considering it as the episode ends. According to Roxburgh, Dory does think her brother will.

“I think that she knows she’s the voice of reason in their lives to both brothers,” she says. “Russell clearly listens to her a little bit more, and I think she thinks Colter will eventually as well.” And she’d be game to be part of that conversation as a mediator, “so long as it brings them together and not further apart.”

Well, it seems like Colter will likely have his sister’s words in mind when he reunites with Russell shortly, after the latter enlists his help to track down a former army buddy who’s gone missing after several weeks of paranoid behavior.

What did you think of Dory? Who do you think is right about their mother, Colter or Dory? Let us know in the comments section, below.

    Ormai manca poco comunque!
