Guarda, è solo un'idea! Può essere invece "in the mouth / of this abandoned church" sia riferito alla chiesa come edificio: come se loro due fossero "inghiottiti" dalla chiesa abbandonata.

Questo è quello che avevo pensato io, ma mi piace anche l'interpretazione che hai dato prima
